Elemental mathematics in the cyberspace
Searching an interesting book whose ideas were good for helping teachers to plan their mathematics lessons, I found this digital book created by Ángel Martinez Recio in 2005. I have to say that is quite interesting and very useful for those teachers that don´t have clear ideas about how start a mathematic lesson about measurement.
This books is known as Elemental mathematics in the cyberspace.
Regarding all the measurement elements, we can find a part of the book that talks about some interesting ideas to practice the measurement with students. Martinez, A. (2005) talks about different stages that is essential to follow by the student:
1. Conceptual games
2. Sort by sizes
3. Evaluation of distances
4. Introduction of the arbitrary length units
5. Presentation of legal units
6. Use of different units in the same measurement.
7. Different statements of measurement. Conservation.
8. Measure with a minimum of units
9. Exchange games.
The games described are not the only way to approach the learning
of the measure of the lenghts in practice. Surely there are others.
The essential thing is that the children go through
all that stages that we have just reviewed. - Martinez, A. (2005)
